1、错觉之一，学生认为“我会国际音标，因此我的发音必然准确”，从而放松对自己寻音的重视。实际上，“会国际音标”而发音不准的人多得很。有些人认为某某人的发音准是国际音标的功劳;其实，即使学了国际音标，如果听到的发音不准，学生发音也不可能准。关键是耳朵听到的音要准，而不是眼睛所看见的符号。
2、错觉之二，学生认为英语单词用字母拼写是毫无规律的，只有音标才能表示单词的读音，因此每记一个单词，要记住其两个书面形式：一个是字母的，另一个是音标的;这就必然增加记单词的难度。同时，学生容易把字母和音标混淆，见到生词，如果后面无音标，容易读错，例如把mail读成mile，即把字母“ai”读成音标/ai/。
1、以听、做、说带路，学单词的拼写形式时采用“读音规则加辅助手段”的办法;应该逐渐培养学生见生词能读出音的.能力;并不是说要学生背规则条条，而是引导学生从所学的单词中自然归纳出规律。个别单词读音有特殊之处就用辅助手段注音(即，在字母上方直接注符号或在单词后面括弧内重拼)，不特殊的就不必注音。英语拼写和读音之间的关系，尽管存在少量的特殊情况，但总的说是有规律的，掌握这些规律对记单词很有帮助。规律是客观存在的，不会因为人不认识它、不利用它而消失。学英语，要记几千、甚至一两万个单词，学生应该学会把单词的意思、读音、拼写三方面结合起来记，而不要总是把音标插在中间起干扰作用。
2、编一本小学生、初中生用的学生词典，有两三千单词就够了，用上述“读音规则加辅助手段”的办法来表示读音。(按新的《课程标准》初中毕业生只要求掌握1200单词)。到了高中，为了查大词典，再学国际音标也不晚，到那时基本读音规律已经掌握好了。
